Tips for Using SVPEP’s Online Database Search Function
We use Reference Manager software for our online database. To get started, we recommend printing this document: Complete tips with screen shots (PDF).
Note: Your browser must accept cookies to search the database.
Basic Tips
To get the most complete results, we recommend “Advanced Search,” which looks for your terms in the Title, Abstract, Summary, and Topic fields of the reference (Reference Manager calls these “Non-Indexed Text Fields”). “Quick Search” looks only at Source, Ref ID, and Keywords (Reference Manager calls these “Indexed Fields”). (Note: due to a software bug, “Indexed Fields” will not search by author’s name. To do so, you must select “Authors” from the dropdown field options.)
For the best results for your search, at the “Advanced Search” screen select “All Indexed Fields” and “All Non-Indexed Text Fields.” Make sure the connector between them is “OR.” Enter the same search term(s) in both fields.
To search for combined terms, use “{” and “}” around each of the terms. For example, searching for “{college men} and {prevention}” (in indexed or non-indexed fields) turns up 12 references. Searching for “college men and prevention” (without brackets) produces 0 results.
