Mission & Agency Overview
Our Family’s Mission: “Making our community a better place to live, to grow up, and to grow
older.”
Our Family, created in October 2005 by the merger of Family Counseling Agency and OUR TOWN, has a combined history of more than 75 years of service to our community
Our Family provides a continuum of services to people in every stage of life — babies, children, youth, families, seniors and disabled adults.
Our counseling programs help individuals and families find the strength within themselves to improve their lives. From anger management to parenting education to domestic violence treatment, our classes give participants new skills to be better people and to have happier, healthier families. Our supervision services give children and their noncustodial parents a safe way to spend time together.
Our homeless services help young people who have no one else to turn to. Whether they’ve run away or been kicked out of the house, whether they’re pregnant or with children or going it alone, whether they want help to reunite with their families or need the skills to make it on their own, we offer the shelter and support they need.
Our education and prevention services make our community a better place. We help neighbors find their own solutions to disputes. We educate youth about rape prevention, give young people a safe and drug-free place to hang out, and prevent bullying in schools.
Our services to older and disabled adults help the frail or housebound continue living with dignity in their own homes through friendly visits, counseling, transportation and grocery shopping. We make sure they access the resources they need to remain independent as long as possible.
Description of Programs/Services
Our Family’s “REEL Talk: Act Out” program combines the peer-delivered dramatic presentation model of our long standing and recognized Teen Theater troupe with the innovative new Teen Film project. Together these dramatically delivered approaches bring a distinct and powerful youth voice with a focus on sexual violence prevention and education.
TEEN THEATER
• Youth-directed theater Youth Empowerment Center with a cast of at-risk youth presenting the
“One Voice” and “Afterthoughts” plays in a variety of community settings.
• Youth actors and Prevention Specialists recruit new actors, select, coordinate, rehearse, and
plan presentations of the plays and receive training and education on sexual violence
prevention.
TEEN FILM
• Four groups of youth film-makers develop, write, direct, and act in dramatic or documentary
presentations on the issue of sexual violence presented at the Skrappy’s Center and through
youth film showcases.
• Prevention Specialists and the Program Manager recruit youth to participate in the project and
train youth on technical and artistic aspects of sexual violence prevention, film production, and
direction.
• Youth and Prevention Specialists publicize and host public screenings of completed films.
